The department of Bacteriology / Microbiology was founded on 8th July 1948 since the inception of the college combining small section of parasitology and pathology. The department was established as an independent department in the year 1961 and initiated M.V.Sc. programme from 1961. In 1963 the first batch of 4 MVSc students received their degrees in Microbiology. Ph. D was one decade later that is in the year 1970. The Ph.D study programme was started by ICAR in 1970. The department of veterinary Microbiology Jabalpur was first in the Vety. Faculty of JNKVV to undertake this programme Dr. S. K. Tanwani was the first Ph.D student of the department. Initial academic research was confined to survey of microbial infections in bovine, ovine, caprine, swine and poultry. In the year 2017, department organised 10 days ICAR Short Course on “Strategies for containment of Antimicrobial Resistance” from 13th to 22nd November, 2017. While, recently 21 days ICAR summer school on the topic “Recent Trends in Molecular Diagnosis of Microbial Pathogens Associated with Livestock & Poultry”from 31st August to 20th Sep 2020 was successfully conducted.
Microbiology laboratory is well equipped for conventional and molecular work with following instruments.
Gel Doc, Microscope, Horizontal Electrophoreses & Thermocycler-
Transilluminator, ELISA Reader, Real time PCR & CO2 Incubator
