Dr. Mandeep Sharma, a distinguished academician, veterinary microbiologist, immunologist, biotechnologist, and researcher, has an illustrious career spanning over three decades in veterinary sciences and administration. Hailing from a rural background in Himachal Pradesh, he graduated in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, followed by a Master's and Ph.D. in Veterinary Microbiology and Immunology from the Veterinary College, Mathura. Dr. Sharma earned prestigious recognitions early in his academic journey, including the ICAR Junior Research Fellowship during his M.V.Sc. and the University Merit Scholarship during his undergraduate studies. During 1998–1999, he undertook postdoctoral research at USDA, Ames, Iowa, USA, under the BOYSCAST Fellowship awarded by the Government of India, focusing on molecular detection and pathogenesis of chlamydiae.
Dr. Sharma joined the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, as an Assistant Professor in 1989 and later served as Dean from August 2017 to May 2023. He also held prominent positions such as Professor and Head of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology for over 17 years, Director of Research, and Nodal Officer for the National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP). Under his leadership, he facilitated research projects worth more than ₹15 crores, established a state-of-the-art Animal Disease Investigation and Research Laboratory valued at ₹3 crores, and mentored three Ph.D. and eighteen M.V.Sc. students.
His research spans diverse infectious animal diseases, including brucellosis, pasteurellosis, tuberculosis, chlamydiosis, VTCC, and food-borne pathogens. He has authored more than 176 research publications in reputed national and international journals, including over nineteen with a NAAS rating above 7.0, along with a book, several book chapters, and popular articles. His contributions have earned him numerous honours, including the Lifetime Achievement Award (2023) from the Indian Association of Veterinary Microbiology, Immunology, and Specialists in Infectious Diseases, the ISVIB Scientist Award, and Fellowship of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences.
Dr. Sharma's international engagements reflect his commitment to advancing veterinary sciences. He has participated in conferences, workshops, and collaborative research in Cyprus, the USA, the UK, France, Israel, Australia, and New Zealand. His notable achievements include the MASHAV Fellowship (Israel), the BOLT Award from Air India, and a Visiting Professorship in Australia. He has also served as a member of key academic and professional bodies, including the Governing Council of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences, the Senate and Academic Council of CSK HPKV, and the Himachal Veterinary Council.
In addition to his administrative and academic contributions, Dr. Sharma has organized numerous professional events and served on various committees to strengthen veterinary education and research. His work continues to inspire advancements in veterinary microbiology, zoonotic disease control, and animal health management.
