▶ Brief History :

The department of veterinary parasitology was established in the year 2007 when College of Veterinary Science and Animal husbandry, Rewa, was opened as third veterinary college in the state of Madhya Pradesh under Madhya Pradesh Pashua Chikitsa Vigyan Vishva Vidyalaya. Since its inception the department is actively engaged in conducting the teaching research and extension activities as per VCI regulation in U.G. programme.

▶ Objectives of the Department :

  • To impart teaching and practical classes of Veterinary Parasitology courses as per VCI regulation in U.G. programme.
  • To conduct basic and applied research on parasitological problems of state and national importance.
  • To undertake the extension of Veterinary Parasitology to the rural people in co-operation with the government departments concerned
  • Impart post-graduate education, research and training

▶ Thrust Areas of Research :

  • Epidemiological studies of the parasitic diseases of domestic and wild animals and to develop their management strategies.
  • Diagnosis of clinical and subclinical parasitic diseases by conventional and molecular techniques and to minimize their impact on production losses.
  • Detection and monitoring of anthelmintic and acaricide resistance and their management.
  • To study zoonotic parasitic diseases and their prevention and control.

▶ Ongoing Research Projects :

A research project entitled, “Tick control practices and survey of acaricide resistance status in cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Hyalomma anatolicumanatolicumin selected areas of Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh”. Sponsored by Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology, Bhopal, M.P. with a budget outlay of Rs 5,48,000/- is running in the department since 2017-18.

Monitoring acaricide resistance in field ticks and use of suitable managemental practices are essential for managing tick populations infesting animals. In this project, bioassay techniques like Adult Immersion Test and Larval Packet Test were used for evaluation of resistance against various acaricides like synthetic pyrethroids, organophosphate and formamidines in Rhipicephalusmicroplus and Hyalomma anatolicum ticks, collected from different villages in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, India. Significant level of resistance inRhipicephalusmicroplus towards various types of acaricides was detected. The level of resistance developed in Hyalomma anatolicum ticks against various acaricides is quite low as compared to Rhipicephalusmicroplus ticks. Presently, we are determining the level of resistance in ticks against ivermectin and organophosphate compounds. Data generated on acaricide resistance status of these two most prevalent and economically important ticks in this region will provide new insights in acaricidal resistance pattern of this region and will help in formulating suitable control measures.

▶ Extension Education :

Faculties are actively participated in diagnostic camps, kisanmela and kisangosthi for welfare of farmers and improving the direct linkage between department and farmer in field situation. Information regarding different parasitic diseases and their control in animals and poultry are also delivered to farmer as radio talks and popular articles. The department also prepares extension pamphlet related to different aspect of parasitic diseases for free circulation among farmers.
