Teaching :-

• More emphasis will be given to Four sections viz. Endocrinology & reproduction, Digestive physiology , Climatology and Hematology section and separate laboratory equipped with all facilities will be developed for each section.

• Emphasis will be given to improve teaching quality to UG, PG and Ph.D. students and will try to make the subject simple, interesting, cacheable and applicable.

• To develop a good hematological as well as biochemical laboratory to improve quality of research of PG, Ph.D. students.

• Comparative studies on growth and production performance of broilers on diets containing Germinated sorghum and multienzyme complex.
• Evaluation of diets containing germinated maize and multienzyme complex on growth and production performance of broilers.
• Studies on phytase supplementation on performance and hemato-biochemical parameters in broilers.
• Growth performance of Kadaknath chickens on germinated grain based rations.
• Effect of different levels of germinated maize based diets on feed conversion ratio and egg production in Kadaknath.

Salient Achievements :-

In addition to curricular research the staff is also engaged in working on departmental research projects, the results of which are published in various journals of repute. The mission of the department is to maintain health and reproductive status of the animals.

• The research conducted in the department of Physiology covers the fundamental aspects of hematology, blood coagulation, liver functions and body water distribution with a view to find out the remedial measures of bleeding disorders due to deficiency of blood coagulation factors and certain liver disorders. Pioneer work on hematology of goat was taken up for the first time in India by this department.
• The thromboelastography, which is an advanced technique for the study of continuous process of blood coagulation, clot rigidity and fibrinolysis, was used for domestic animals for the first time in the department. Goat’s brain thromboplastin was successfully used to replace rabbit’s brain thromboplastin for the determination of prothrombin time in buffaloes. Biochemical changes in the blood of buffalo calf infected with Rinderpest virus were studied in detail. The changes in blood coagulation pattern in these animals were also studied including thromboelastography.
• Normal values of various blood /liver enzymes and metabolites have been established for the first time in goats. Effect of aldrin and malathione intoxication and liver damage on these parameters was also studied in this species.
• Values for body water, serum electrolytes and hematology in different age groups of goats were also reported.
• The biochemical knowledge was explored in nutritional research for the benefit of mankind and animals enabling them to lead healthy living. The work on vitamin contents in different local feed stuffs, incorporation of Soya products in human diets as a cheap source for protein, was conducted in this department and encouraging results were obtained. The work was also done in the propagation of utilization of different Soya products.
• The curricular research conducted in biochemistry showed that supplementation of phosphorus and copper during third trimester of pregnancy or on disease onset is beneficial.
• Values for lipid and protein profile in different stages of pregnancy and lactation in Murrah buffaloes and Sirohi goats were also reported.
• Germinated grains (Sorghum and Maize) when given in feed to broilers at the level of 50% and 75% in comparison to normal un-germinated grains gave better growth performance in broilers as well as the tenderness of the meat is also improved without any additional cost. It is very much economical and profitable to poultry farmers.
• Supplementation of germinated maize in feed of kadaknath layer birds had very good effect on egg production, growth, feed conversion ratio along with availability of protein, calcium, and phosphorus, also there was a decreasing trend in total cholesterol, specially at the level of 50% and 75% germinated maize as compared to the non-germinated maize based diets.
• Supplementation of germinated maize and sorghum in Kadaknath feed had very good effect on production, growth, feed conversion ratio, availability of protein, calcium, phosphorus, and certain other bivalent and trivalent ions, specially at the level of 75% germinated maize and 50% germinated sorghum. It is more economical and profitable to the farmers as there were no additions of costly feed additive in the ration of Kadaknath birds.
• Phytase enzyme supplementation in feed significantly increased the weight gain of broilers. The enzyme was costing only 5.0 paisa, when 900 IU of phytase added to 1.0 kg of feed.

• One research project entitled “To study the toxic effect of Acaricides on goats” funded by MPCOST, Bhopal, was completed.
• The teachers of the department were associated as Co-investigator with an ICAR New Delhi funded research project entitled “To study the effect of MIC on reproductive performance and general health of buffalo and poultry”.
• One departmental Research Projects entitled “Beneficial Effects of Melatonin on Growth Performance in Broilers” was conducted and found that the growth performance is good in broilers after supplementation of Melatonin.
