Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Mhow

▶ Brief History :

At the time of establishment of the college in 1955 there was a joint Department of Pathology, Bacteriology and Parasitology. In 1964 an independent Department of Microbiology was created, which was elevated to postgraduate department in the year 1971. To date 54 students have completed their M.V.Sc. and 04 PhD degrees from this department.

▶ Objectives of the Department :

To impart quality education of Veterinary Microbiology and Immunology to veterinary graduates.
To motivate veterinarians for research in various disciplines of Veterinary Microbiology and Immunology and inculcate research aptitude through PG teaching.
To extend the research findings in Veterinary Microbiology to the doorsteps of animal honors.

▶ Thrust Areas of Research :

Studies on mastitogens, and enteric bacteria associated with diseases of livestock with special reference to virulence factors, molecular pathogenesis and anti microbial resistance (AMR) by conventional and molecular methods.
Studies on ESKAPE group of bacteria associated with animals and poultry, animal farms, animal products and environment with special reference to emerging AMR and AMR genes.
Studies on viral pathogens infecting upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts of animals and poultry.
Development of POCT diagnostic tests for infectious diseases.
Evaluation of alternative therapeutic agents for treatment of bacterial infections of livestock and poultry to avoid emergence of AMR.

▶ Research :

The research activity on following aspects is going on in the department.

Studies on enteric pathogens.
Antimicrobial resistance in bacteria.
Mastitogens.
Canine parvo virus.
Paratuberculosis.

Salient Achievements : During last 5 years, students and staff of the department has received many awards from different professional societies of India.

The scientist of this department developed a new oral vaccine for Newcastle disease in 1978. This earned them Hari Om Asharam Trust Award of I.C.A.R. in 1975 and K.S. Nair Award of I. V. J. in 1978.
Another remarkable work was attempt towards development of thermostable vaccine for Ranikhet disease.
A dot ELISA test was developed to study seroprevalence of Avian Infection Bronchitis virus in collaboration with D.R.D.O., Gwalior.
Development of phage display recombinant antibodies against recombinant gag antigen of Bovine Immunodeficiency virus
Production and characterization of monoclonal antibodies against Avian Influenza virus and standardization of Mab-based indirect ELISA
Molecular characterization of pestiviruses from small ruminants in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. It was first report of isolation of BVDV-1c virus from sheep and goats in India (in collaboration with H.S.A.D.L., Bhopal, India).
The faculty members and the post graduate student of this department in past has successfully conducted research projects on Leptospira, Staphylococci, Brucella, Avian mycoplasma, Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, Aeromonas, Clostridia, fungi and bacteria causing mastitis, infectious infertility, gangrenous dermatitis, respiratory viruses of sheep, goats and poultry, Infectious Laryngeotracheitis virus, Fowl Pox virus and Ranikhet virus and Public Health aspects of foods of animal origin.
The department successfully completed two I.C.A.R. adhoc research schemes: (a) Control of Brucellosis in Madhya Pradesh and (b) Tissue culture studies on avian viruses.

▶ Completed Research Projects :

(a) Externally Funded Research Projects :-

Collaborating centre for “All India Network Programme on Blue Tongue (funded by I.C.A.R.).
Infrastructure for Development of improvised vaccines for prevention of bacterial diseases of dairy animals in Madhya Pradesh” – (Funded by the Deptt. of Animal Husbandry, Govt. of M.P. under R.K.V.Y. Scheme).

(b) Projects Under Public Private Enterpreneurship (PPE) 2009-10 :-

Standardization of bivalent Marek’s disease vaccine (INDOVAX Pvt. Ltd., Gurgaon).
Assessment of bacteriological quality of empty hard gelatin capsule shells (MEDI-CAPS Ltd., Pithampur).

▶ Extension Education :

The department undertakes extension activities and assists the Veterinary College hospital and other Civil Veterinary Hospitals and animal owners in diagnosing the diseases. The faculty members attend the diseases outbreaks and advise the owners /veterinarians on prevention and control of infectious diseases
Department publish popular articles and deliver radio and T.V. talks and extension lectures to the farmers.
In year 2008-09 department conducted two trainings of four days each on the “Diagnosis and control of bird flu” for the field veterinary officers deputed by the Govt. of M.P. The training was sponsored by the Veterinary Council of India as a part of their C.V.E. programme.
Department successfully conducted training of field veterinarians on the topic “Prevention and control of infection diseases of livestock and poultry” in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Medicine under A.S.C.A.D. programme of the Govt. of India (5 training in 2009-10, 7 training in 2010-11).

The department has published more than 250 research articles in various National and International journals.

Facilities are available for isolation and identification of bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens.
Facilities are available for cell culture, immunological studies, ELISA and PCR.
