Brief History :

The department of Parasitology, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Jabalpur, came in existence as an independent department in 1965. Prior to this, the department was an integral part of Department of Pathology, Bacteriology and Parasitology since inception of erstwhile C.P. and Barar College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Jabalpur in 1948.

It will not be out of place to mention that this department had the privilege of being guided at different periods by some of the eminent parasitologists of the country. Besides teaching of Parasitology in BVSc and AH, Masters Degree (MVSc & A.H.) programme in Parasitology was started from 1967 and Doctorate (Ph.D.) programme, from 1974. Following is the summary of achievements, this department has made since 1965.

Objectives of the Department :
  • To impart education and training to the undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as farmers and field veterinarians in different aspects of veterinary Parasitology.
  • To provide for the advancement of learning and prosecution of research in Veterinary Parasitology.
  • To undertake the extension of Veterinary Parasitology to the rural people in co-operation with the government departments concerned.

  • Department is well equipped with various instruments to conduct both classical and advance researches of Veterinary Parasitology.

Research :
Salient Achievements :-
  • Stephanofilaria zaheeri: The lesions of Ear sore in buffaloes were shown to be due to microfilariae and not by the female or males worms.
  • Schistosoma incognitum: It can & does produce disease in the abnormal host i.e. monkey, however, without becoming patent. Since the substitute host of Man, i.e. Rhesus Monkeys, are susceptible, it is suspected to be a potential zoonosis.
  • Sarcocystis fusiformis: Pioneering studies on the biochemistry and histochemistry of the sarcocysts of S. fusiformis of buffalo were carried out.
  • Sarcocystis capracanis: Epizotiology, Gametogonous & sporogonous phases of the life cycle, pathogenesis & treatment of S. capracanis were undertaken for the first time in India.
  • Sarcocystis infection in Pariah Kite (Milvus migrans) was recorded for the first time.
  • Sarcocystis infection in Barasingha (Cervus duvaceli branderi), an endangered species of wild ruminant, was recorded was recorded for the first time.
  • Sarcocystis suihominis: Higher rate of prevalence was reported from Jabalpur region. Reason for this rate of this was determined to be infection between man and it was concluded that man’s own habits and activities were responsible for it.
  • The successful development of Schistosoma nasale adult in sheep and rabbits showed possibility of the development of this blood fluke in unnatural hosts including man.
  • Diagnosis of schistosomosis in domestic animals during pre-patent phase was established by Immunoflourent Antibody Test (IFAT).
  • For the first time in the state, studies on the prevalence of Gastrointestinal Parasites of livestock, in all the agro-climatic zones of Madhya Pradesh, are being made. So far Haemonchus has been found to be the predominant G.I. nematode.
  • Pioneering studies on biochemistry of Ascaris suum was carried out.
  • Successful in-vitro maintenance of Ascaris suum has been achieved.

  • Estimation of economic losses due to GI nematodosis in goats in Madhya Pradesh.

  • Preparation of Bioclimatograph for different Agro climatic zones of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Epidemiological studies on different endo and ecto parasites.
  • Anthelmintic resistance.
