Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Jabalpur

▶ Brief History :

The teaching of Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology & Obstetrics was initiated in 1951 in the Veterinary College, Jabalpur after three years of its establishment in 1948 under the department of Veterinary Surgery. Initially the courses related to reproduction were taught by Dr. H.N. Chelva Ayenger. Later the courses were taught by Dr. G. W. Vaidhya and Dr. Rangan. Dr. Ved Prakash Mittal (L.V.P., Lahore) joined the department in 1959-60 and continued teaching Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics in the combined Department of Veterinary Surgery. In decade of 1960s Dr. Nils Lagerloff visited India for evaluation of reproductive status and problem of livestock as representative of FAO. After his visit, a 9 months special training programme on Animal Reproduction was initiated in Sweden. Dr. Mittal was selected for the programme and after training programme he was conferred Fellowship of the Royal Veterinary College, Sweden (F.R.V.C.S., Sweden). Simultaneously independent department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics was started in all the veterinary colleges of the country. In Jabalpur, after the establishment of Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya in 1964, the facilities of the department were strengthened and undergraduate teaching programme started under the Department of Veterinary Gynaecology & Obstetrics in 1967.

Completed Research Projects:

Developed insulin modified estrus synchronization & Timed AI Protocols in buffaloes.
Developed modification of estrus synchronization & Timed AI Protocols in goats and introduced AI in Goats in MP.
Reported short duration induction of lactation protocol in cows.

▶ Ongoing Research Projects :

Studies are going on methods of non surgical contraception in male dogs. Pilot trials have been made for Intratesticular administration of some chemical solutions for sterilization of male dogs. Some more studies are going on using therapeutic ultrasound and chemical contraception in male dogs.

Organized 03- MAITRI Trainings of 30 days under Rashtriya Gokul mission to 100 participants.
Contributed in animal health and infertility camps; kisan sangosthies, Dog shows; extension articles and radio talks as well as TV talks etc.
