Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Jabalpur

Brief History

Department of Materia Medica earlier, later Pharmacology and now known as Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology was established as an independent Department in 1965. The Post graduate degree programme (M.V.Sc.) was started in 1968 and Ph.D. in 1979. Till December 2017, 53 students have been awarded M.V.Sc and 11 Ph.D. degrees in the discipline of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology.
Government Veterinary College offered courses leading to degree of Veterinary Science (B.V.Sc.) and was affiliated to university of Sagar
After the superannuation of Dr. K.S. Bhandari, Dr. Y.P. Sahni became the Head of the department. In the year 2007, four new Assistant Professors namely, Dr. Nitish Kumar, Dr. Neetu Rajput, Dr. Kshemankar Shrman and Dr. Vidhi Gautam joined the department.
In the year 2010, Dr. R.K. Sharma was transferred from Veterinary College, Mhow to Veterinary College, Jabalpur and from January 2012 onwards, Dr. R.K Sharma is working as Head of the department. Presently along with Dr. R. K. Sharma, Dr. K. Shrman Dr. Vidhi Gautam and Dr. Sachin Jain are the faculty members in the department.

Research

Salient Achievements:

  • Studies on prevalence, Characterization and inhibitory potential of herbs on extended spectrum beta Lactamase Escherichia Coli in Broilers
Research Scholar : Dr. Arpita Shrivastav (2016) PhD
Major advisor : Dr. R. K. Sharma

Antibiotic resistance due to ESBL E. coli was prevalent in healthy broilers of Jabalpur with a prevalence per cent of 33.5. Clove oil showed maximum and Tulsi leaves showed minimum inhibitory potential and per cent inhibition ESBL enzymes, combination of Clove oil, Tulsi and Pomegranate produced better activity than individual herbs.

  • Studies on antibacterial activity of endophytic bacteria isolated from Neem, Mulberry and Aloe Vera leaves
Research Scholar : Ankit Kumar Singh (2016)
Major advisor : Dr. R. K. Sharma

Endophytic bacteria were present in leaves of Azadiracta indica (neem), Morus nigra (mulberry) and Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaves. Endophytic bacteria from neem possess maximum antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogens, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typimurium and Klebsiella pneumonia. Endophytic bacteria from mulberry possess antibacterial activity against Streptococcus pyogens. Endophytic bacteria form Aloe vera possess antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pnemoniae. Endophytic bacteria from neem showed probiotic like activity.
