Brief History
The extension department has been established in 1965 as per the recommendation of ICAR under the scheme of establishment of the extension wing. The post of assistant professor of extension was filled in January, 1965 and that of the professor of extension in December, 1965 which was recognised as extension specialist. As a result of the organisation of the department; the extension departments of the veterinary colleges were merged with the department of extension education and rural sociology of the agriculture faculty in 1968. Thus the extension wing started working soon after its establishment. Dr. R.M. Bakshiwas appointed as head of the department in 1973.
After introduction of VCI regular department has been set up and there were three courses introduced in Ist year (Sociology and Fundamentals of Veterinary & A.H. Extension and Livestock Economics Marketing & Business Management)and 4th year(Extension Techniques in Veterinary Practice and Livestock Production ). Thereafter two revisions have been taken place in 2008 and 2016 by Veterinary Council of India. Presently one course veterinary extension education is running in BVSc. & AH since 2016 in 3rd year.
Postgraduate teaching programme has been introduced in the year 2020 and at present two students have registered. The UG and PG students are taken to the villages where extension work is being undertaken for practical experience.
Department is regularly providing veterinary and animal husbandry extension services among livestock owners in nearby villages of the college in the form of trainings, exposure visits, camps etc. Four villages has been adopted namely Harsola, Rangwasa, Jamli and Rau where regular ambulatory service is provided. Department is handling project like MeraGaonMeraGaurav, ICAR Tribal Sub Plan (TSP), ICAR Schedule Cast Sub Plan (SC-SP) under which regular trainings and camps are being organised.
Department has introduced a facility of PashupalanParamarsh Kendra in 2021 for giving advice to the farmers to make them aware regarding latest technologies as well as government schemes related to animal husbandry.
Objectives of the Department
- To impart quality education to undergraduate students of B.V.Sc. &A.H. degree course as per the VCI guidelines.
- To undertake area specific extension education based research for beneficial to regional farming community.
- To transfer livestock technologies to livestock farming community through Veterinary Extension Education activities.
- To disseminate latest information regarding various aspects of veterinary and animal husbandry practices to the farmers and animal owners.
Thrust area of research
- To study level of knowledge of livestock owners regarding scientific animal husbandry practices
- To study adoption of latest technologies by the farmers of the region.
- To study present practices adopted by the farmers related to animal husbandry.
- To study the attitude of farmers regarding latest technologies of livestock production.
- To study effectiveness of different communication channels in dissemination of scientific animal husbandry practices.
