Brief History
The Laboratory of Department of Animal Nutrition was set up in the year 1956. It is one of the promising departments of the college and focuses on studying the dietary needs of the animals and provides exceptional undergraduate instructions and guidelines. From the year 1976 post graduate (M.V.Sc.) programme was started in the department and upto 2020 42 students have completed their M.V.Sc. degree and one student has completed his Ph.D. degree. 4 students are continuing their M.V.Sc. degree and 8 students have newly registered in 2021. Animal nutrition laboratory (Feed Fodders Analysis) is equipped with all the types of equipment as per VCI norms such as hot air oven, muffle furnace, Kjeldahl apparatus, Soxhlet apparatus, spectrophotometer, and water distillation assembly for undergraduate education. It also provides an opportunity for students to learn about haymaking, urea ammoniated straw preparation, area-specific mineral mixture mixing, etc. The information about scientific feeding practices and current technologies used in the feed industry is assessed through the frequent field and farm visits to broaden the spectra of learning. Area Specific Mineral Mixture for Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh on small scale is prepared in the departments.
Objectives of the Department
- To evaluate feed or fodder to ascertain their quality.
- Determination of nutritional deficiencies responsible for low animal production.
- Teaching of animal nutrition to the student of B.V.Sc. & A.H., M.V.Sc. and Ph.D.
- To advise farmers to feed balanced and quality ration to livestock and poultry and to economize dairy and poultry farming.
- Production and Supply of mineral mixture to the dairy farmers.
Thrust Areas of Research
- Impact assessment/evaluation of Herbal Feed Additives in livestock and poultry.
