Animal Genetics and Breeding, Jabalpur

Brief History

The Department of Animal Genetics & Breeding came into existence as an independent department, in the year 1964. Prior to this the department was a part of Animal Husbandry Department. The master Degree programme in the department started in the year 1964 while the Ph.D. programme started in 1974. The Department is imparting teaching to U.G students of B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree courses as per VCI Course curriculum and postgraduate degree courses as per ICAR. Till date 65 M.V.Sc & AH & 20 Ph.D. students have been awarded their degree under different disciplines like Population Genetics, Cytogenetics, Biochemical Genetics, Quantitative Genetics and Molecular Genetics. The Faculty members of the department have published more than 430 research papers in National and International Journals , 5 Books, 3 Bulletins and 6 Laboratory Manuals.

Mandate of the department:

  • To conduct undergraduate teaching.
  • To conduct post graduate teaching and research.
  • Transfer of technology to farmers, extension personals and organizations engaged in the enhancement of animal productivity through various extension programmes.

Thrust areas of the department

Basic

  • Survey, evaluation genotyping, polymorphic studies, molecular characterization using microsatellite DNA markers, PCR-RFLP studies of indigenous breeds of Madhya Pradesh.
Strategic
  • Conservation of native breeds of livestock and poultry of Madhya Pradesh using in-situ and ex-situ conservation methods. Cattle improvement in the field with a view to enhance the income of farmers through dairy farming. Use of Biotechnology for the improvement of productivity of livestock and poultry.
Applied
  • To improve the production potential of indigenous cattle breeds of M.P., such as Malvi, Nimari, Kenkatha and Gaolao and Bhadawari breed of buffalo through appropriate selection programme. The improvement of cattle will results in improving the milk production on the individual basis and in overall productivity and will help in raising the income of the farmers ultimately resulting in raising their social and economic status.
