The department is established from the opening of the institute with knowledgeable staff members. Dr. M.R. Patel, Dr. A.P. Singh, Dr. Soni, Dr. S.C. Singh, Dr. S.K.Nakra and Dr. S.S. Pandey led the department since inception. The departmental activity was started with teaching research and extension activity related to improve the method of surgical treatment. The department is actively engaged in producing competent graduate, post graduate students who can compete in national and international level. Department is mainly involved in the teaching research and extension activity of the college.

Department is also involved in treatment of surgical cases brought to the hospital in routine, odd and emergency hours.

Department also implement work in the field which create awareness and apathy towards causes/reasons affecting animal health and communicate the technology developed in the department to the farmers and pet owners.
